Sure, the end of the year is all about the holidays and the inevitable radio assault of “All I Want For Christmas Is You”, but for me it’s also that time of the year when I can reflect on the year in pop music thanks to my fave mashup producers DJ Earworm, Daniel Kim and Robin Skouteris.
My mashups options have gotten increasing limited—- Daniel Kim hasn’t made a “Pop Danthology” for the last two years now and DJ Earworm work has grown increasingly too “high brow” for my mashup tastes. I love that Earworm aims to create a thematically cohesive and entirely new song using the year’s 25 biggest hits, but that often has him using unrecognizable snippets which takes all the fun out of hearing “Bodak Yellow” blend into “Shape Of You” followed by “Humble”—- cuz you don’t know that’s what you’re listening to.
With two of my three go to mixers not panning out, it was Robin Skouteris to the rescue with his packed medley of some of the year’s most inescapable hits. Yes, “Despacito” is present as well as Cardi B, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, French Montana, Bruno Mars and a surprising inclusion—a first—of K-pop giants of BTS and EXO! After listening to 75 songs dip in and out of the 13 minute production, the epic mix concludes with a touching tribute to Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington.
Look back at the year that was in pop music below by checking out the equally impressively edited video before we head into a new year of endless candidates for the forthcoming 2018 mix in December.
