So here I was, all set to go to bed waaaay later than I intended when YouTube informs me that a new Big Bang single just dropped—Huh? Wha? I curse you notifications… but good lookin’ out.
The fellas aim to hold on to their “Kings of K-Pop” crown by releasing this lil’ ditty while most of the members are either serving or about to enlist for their mandatory military service. “Flower Road” isn’t as immediate as say, “Bang Bang Bang”, but it’s a decent enough placeholder while we wait—a couple of years—for the inevitable massive reunion. The production of the track’s opening hip hop/acoustic guitar mashup gives way to a chorus section that ventures into “Irreplaceable” territory while quirky keyboard accents keep things less Beyoncé and a bit more K-Pop. Vocally, the fellas are in fine form and while the hook is a bit of a letdown, it’s nice to hear all five of ‘em together one more time considering their enlistments, T.O.P’s recent weed scandal and TaeYang’s marriage make it seem like it’s been forever since we’ve had a proper single.
Big Bang releases are usually hit or miss with me and while “Flower Road” isn’t a “one ‘n’ done” type of listen, I don’t know if it’ll make it to my regular rotation playlist after the initial excitement of having a new single from them wears off. I gotta admit though, I’m on my third listen and.. it DOES kinda grow on you.
UPDATE: So this “new” song was apparently recorded during the sessions for MADE, which makes sense given the song’s similarity to the far superior “Fxxk It”.
