With Big Bang on hiatus, BLACKPINK and Winner are saddled with the Herculean task of keeping YG afloat until the agency’s marquee artists complete their military service. Winner’s release early spring release didn’t grab me like last year’s “Really Really” did, so I was only mildly interested in what BP was cookin’ up for their comeback.
I like BlackPink as they obviously fill the void left by breakup of 2NE1 but their track record is hit or miss—- I loved “Whistle”... “Boombayah”? Not so much. I was a bit underwhelmed on the first listen of new single “DDU-DU DDU-DU” and 3/4 through the song I decided to shut it off and watch the video so that I could experience the visual as well.
The video makes ALL the difference in the world as I was pretty much sold on the song about 15 seconds in. Disco ball tanks, killer styling, “whaaaa”-worthy sets, it’s all here and the ladies do an impressive job of owning the production rather than getting lost in it. The added bonus is that the lyrics apparently tap into the feminist moving currently happening in South Korea and thus, those who are too young(!) to remember “I Am The Best” now have their own anthem.
My only quibble is that I wish the dance break at the end hit a bit harder and I’m a bit let down that I needed the visuals to sell me on the song, but it’s still great to have the ladies back giving us the perfect kick ass attitude antidote to some of the cutesier antics of other female idol groups.
