This single dropped a while ago and I’d assumed that the promo for it was relegated to nothing more than a fleeting mention of the track on Bran’s recent revealing episode of Behind The Music. However, it seems “Put It Down” has some life in it yet as the video curiously pops up outta nowhere as though radio has been bumpin’ this all along… has it?
In either case, B. Rocka attempts to right the wrong that is unfairly being known to young ‘uns as “Ray J’s sister” by emerging with a box of new wigs and an update on the sassy attitude from the Afrodisiac era. The “out with the old and in with the… old” makeover continues as La Norwood kicks it old school by rocking some 90’s Moesha braids that immediately had me chanting, ”...Mo to tha/E to tha…”
Don’t get me wrong though, I’m digging this sorta new direction for B. and I’m totally hoping for a Mimi-esque Emancipation of Brandy-style comeback. 2012 Brandy, apparently, is a glamourpuss with vixen tendencies as this new video finds her flirting with a crew of dudes and struttin’ ‘n’ hip popping with her girls. The visuals are part way-too-dark acid trip, part fashion shoot and part Sony Vaio commercial—- but it totally gets the job done. It’s a pretty predictable artistic direction with the only real surprise being that Brandy hasn’t really aged since her “The Boy Is Mine” days. Good black don’t crack, indeed!
While I question how wise it is to release a video so long after the song’s premiere, it is nice to see a 90s star still trying to keep it relevant in the new millennium… even if it means latching onto Chris Brown to make it happen. Perhaps a stronger first single might have been a better choice, but I’m still rooting for homegirl. Que Viva La Brandy! Grade: B-
