The Boys of Bangtan are back and aiming straight for dat wallet with the “repackage” (remember the “Deluxe Edition” trend several years back when an artist would re-release the same album with a couple of new songs and/or remixes?... that’s what this is) of their most recent album LOVE YOURSELF 結 “Answer”.
BTS returns with a loud, in your face banger that sounds like “Not Today” on steroids and the new song boasts an equally epic video to match. “Idol” is a track that starts with a muted horn riff and dramatically builds up to a chorus that truly takes off when it ventures into a vaguely dancehall drop. Making no apologies for being the most popular boy band in the universe right now, the fellas throw on their best technicolor suits and take turns snarling at their haters, loving themselves and shouting out their fans amidst a lot of “ohhhhs”, a sea of crazy green screen sharks, CG effects and the requisite army of dancers. As K-Pop has never passed up a chance to hop on a trend, the guys also manage to sneak a little Gwara Gwara into their choreography—- I see you! The video seems to build on themes that they’ve touched on in the past—- J-Hope’s airplane moment, for example—- but I’m sure the die-hards will do a much better job of dissecting it all than I can.
In an effort to expand an already impressive U.S. fanbase, they strategically convinced Nicki Minaj to drop a verse on a version of the track, though the song might be a bit too K-Pop for American audiences who don’t venture far from their Taylor/Ed Sheeran/Weeknd pop comfort zone… for now. Check out the Nicki-less video and the Minaj “remix” below.
