Well, well, well… After a few buzz singles and two years of promises and hints, it looks like that this “Launch CL In America” is finally for serious! I was really starting to think that all the crossover talk was eventually gonna be met with an “ummm… just kidding” type of press release.
So here we are in the final :( days of summer and CL (the Left Eye of 2NE1) has dropped what I’m assuming is her official(?) U.S. debut single. It’s a laid back, late summer Hip Pop jam that plays it way safe in order to increase its chances of getting some serious love from radio. I’m sure most of her fans aren’t down with the Wu, but “Lifted” samples liberally from Wu Tang’s “Method Man” and Meth cosigns on it all by making a cameo in the video for a quick two step with “The Baddest Female.”
The video plays it safe as well as the Dave Meyers-directed clip plants CL firmly in “urban” NYC and surrounds the star with dancers and extras who are the go to when one needs American/street cred. Perhaps the crossover failures of acts like The Wonder Girls and BoA have Team CL a lil’ shook so they’ve decided to forego positioning her as an artist bringing a multicultural look/sound to the pop landscape and have opted to simply market her as an Americanized Korean girl.
The song and video are OK—- the special effects are kinda dope—- and with so much money invested in breaking her in the States, I get why “Lifted” is essentially a Rihanna-fication of CL for a U.S. audience.
