It’s the British Biebs! OK, so perhaps that is unfair as this Conor kid truly has some vocal chops. However, the fact is that he and Bieber are both scrawny white boys gunning for that blue eyed soul pop throne that Timberlake abandoned for a “serious actor” bid which means that the Justin/Conor comparisons are unavoidable.
I discovered this Conor Maynard a few weeks ago when I saw him performing “Can’t Say No” at a radio station pop concert in the U.K. His vocals were a bit shaky but the track’s spacey R&B production piqued my interest and further investigation revealed that dude isn’t your average vapid teen pop swoon magnet. Taking the now familiar stardom path of building a fanbase with a series of YouTube covers of popular songs from the likes of Drake, Jessie J and Bruno Mars, Ol’ Con has parlayed his online following into record deal.
With half the effort and twice the vocal ability, Mr. Maynard’s music successfully rocks an urban pop vibe and thus positions him as “the cool white boy” that Justin Bieber is trying so hard—- waaay too hard—- to be. Admittedly, neither of the video clips below are especially noteworthy, with “Vegas Girl” suggesting that the C. May needs to work on his game-spitting (“massage technique” bragging two seconds after meeting a girl? Really Con?) and dancing ability (what was that constant double thumb self-pointing thing?) However, both videos reveal that the kid and his team already have a knack for crafting slick tracks with ear candy hooks and that alone should take him far.
I’m kinda feeling like the slightly awkward boy we see now is gonna develop into someone more polished so that the Bieber references will eventually, and in Conor’s mind “thankfully”, be a thing of the past. Featuring collaborations with Ne-Yo and Rita Ora as well as production from The Neptunes, Conor’s debut album Contrast is set to drop July 30 but you can get a jump on the Mayn-ia (see what I did there?) and preview seven of the tracks now!
