I recently mentioned this guy in an interview I did for the Alvin Ailey website and I’ve seen a sudden rash of mentions on other sites, so why not go on and finally give him a little shine here on Q’s Views?
Straight outta the U.K., it’s Daley, a new vocalist who seems eager to join Robin Thicke, Jon B. and Daryl Hall in the male wing of the Blue Eyed Soul Hall of Fame. DayDay’s first taste of chart success came when we was featured on Gorillaz’ single “Doncamatic” from the re-release of the group’s Plastic Beach album.
Although most fans cite his stunning, vocally identical cover of Maxwell’s “Pretty Wings” or buzz single “Game Over” as the track that initially caught their attention, it was his take on Madonna’s “Like A Virgin” that had me Googling homeskillet for more info on his music. Released this past summer, Those Who Wait, is Daley’s maiden voyage on the choppy waters of mainstream success and the mixtape is a solid collection of original material that could easily have been material saved for an official label debut album. While my favorite tracks change depending on the time of day, the highlight for me has consistently been “Alone Together”, a duet with ex-Floetry vocalist Marsha Ambrosius that is a quiet storm classic waiting to be discovred—- R&B radio, where you at?
The Erik Hassle hair and the super fly poindexter glasses definitely give him a stylistic edge and with the right marketing, he could definitely make a bit of noise here on U.S. soil for those of us completely and thoroughly underwhelmed with Trey Songz’ oversexed and uninspired brand of radio R&B. Check out most of the songs featured on Those Who Wait below, then head over to D’s website for a generous free download of the mixtape and stay tuned to Q’s Views for updates on this One To Watch.
UPDATE: Go ‘head S.O.B’s, you guys are doing it! So, I just mentioned in my post about another underground R&B dude making noise (Mateo—- check it out here) who will be playing at S.O.B’s and now I find out that Daley has just announced a show there as well! Daley’s NYC live debut(?) is goin’ down December 18th. Stay tuned for details.
UPDATE TO THE UPDATE: OK, so word on the street is that the show will be an acoustic set(!) and it has now been rescheduled for December 20th. Book your tix here and shall I see you there???
