I really didn’t know what to expect with this one. The paparazzi pix made sure we at least knew what the aesthetic was but Team Janet wasn’t about to reveal everything by having playback on set!
Well… the secret is out and Janet’s new single “Made For Now” is a breezy, summery, feel good slice of Afro-pop that infuses Caribbean and Latin influences in a pretty dense visual mix. Janet serves a series of urban/bohemian/African looks in a clip that feel like an update of “Escapade” and “Runaway”. Flanked by a troupe of African dancers for most of the video, Jan finally gives us what we’d been waiting for—- a choreographed dance section!—- about 3/4 of the way into the clip. Daddy Yankee is along for the ride and while I still feel like Maluma or J Balvin would’ve been a better… a more “now” pairing… Mr. “D.Y.” holds it down and will undoubtedly open the appeal of the track to a broader, international audience.
At this point in her career, Janet doesn’t have to prove anything and the new single/video isn’t the jaw-dropper that “If” or “Scream” were. However, “Made For You” is still notable in it’s own right as a much needed celebration of the beauty of people of color and perhaps an 11th hour contender for song of the summer?
