I’ve been meaning to blog about this guy for a minute and now that my schedule has calmed down a bit, allow me to introduce you to Jarell Perry.

Sure, a cursory listen will have you putting this guy in the same R&B box as Miguel and Frank Ocean but Perry isn’t trying so hard to be different like Migz and he doesn’t seem as Hip Hop-centric as Ocean.  I discovered Jarell around the same time that I got put on to Jon Bellion and no J.P. isn’t as musically adventurous as Bellion, his Simple Things album is still a solid collection of studio slick R&B mid-tempo joints with a glossy pop sheen.

“Awkward” and “Getaway” are the current standout tracks for me and constantly get the repeat treatment on my iPod as the lush ballads and their soaring choruses sound great in a pair of good headphones.  Elsewhere on the album, Perry like Bellion, dabbles with dubstep on the a pair of tracks (“Happy 4 U”, “Wake Up”) which seems a bit two years ago at this point.  Misgivings about a dated sound aside, I am starting to warm up a bit to “Wake Up” with its larger than life epic production triumphing over the Skrillex-sounding drop that frames it.

If there is room for the likes of Chris Brown and Trey Songz in the current R&B landscape, then surely cats like Jarell Perry and Mateo deserve a shot at some radio love too.  Check out Simple Things below and then take Jarell up on his generous offer to dowload the album for free(!) by clicking here.
