Well it’s “alright with me”... the relevancy train has graciously made a stop in Jacksonville this week and is giving my girl Janet a lil’ bit of love!
It’s nice to know that even these new school rappers have love for Jan as evidenced by “Poetic Justice”, a highlight from Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, the debut album from hip hop’s latest hype, Kendrick Lamar. Not only does the song sample Ms. Jackson’s classic “Anytime, Anyplace” but the Lamar titles the song after J’s early 90’s flick where she played a poetry loving hairdresser from the hood.
I’m not crazy about how the sample was used, but introducing J.J. to a new audience ain’t a bad thing either. Hopping on the unofficial remix to “Poetic…” is Busta Rhymes and Q-Tip. With Busta having worked with La Jackson for both the single and video for “What’s It Gonna Be” and Tip co-starring opposite her back in the day in Poetic Justice—- the movie—-, it only made sense that they’d hop on this track and reminisce about the “shorty who got away.”
While Jan gets love in the streets, she’s also getting some shine on the tube as well. The promo for the upcoming season of the USA Network’s buddy comedy Psych features a cut ‘n’ paste rendition of her 80’s hit “Nasty”. With all this shouting out of her past glories, perhaps the stage is being set for an eagerly-awaited (by me, at least) full on, triumphant return to form, supersized comeback for the Jackson whose first name ain’t baby in 2013. A boy can dream, can’t he?
