Yaaaassss! Now this is more like it! No wonder M.I.A. looked like she was sleepwalking in that Madonna video, cuz she knew her sh*t was gonna be so much hotter.
30 seconds into this video I already knew that I was in for a ride… no pun intended. The opening notes of that beat, the desert imagery, the styling—- everything about it already had me in “awwwwww sh*t” mode and the first verse hadn’t even kicked in. “Bad Girls” was originally featured on M’s 2010 mixtape Vicki Leekx, but it looks as though it will now serve as the lead single from her forthcoming album. Reportedly shot in Morocco, “Bad” takes takes the culture and phenomenon of car tricks and stunts, commonly known as hagwalah or “Arab drifiting”, adds in some Middle Eastern tough chick swag, and divides the whole thing by an expertly executed concept for what will probably be the best video of the year… yeah, I said it!
The shots of M on the two-wheeling car, the galloping horse, that neon station wagon(!), the stunts (those two dudes who were street skating?!?!?!?!), the choreography and again that styling… ugh, there is much about this video that is so ridiculously bad a$$ and beyond—- this is the wig snatching “I’m back, b*tches” moment that Madonna’s juvenile Old Navy commercial of a video should have been. The last time I has such a strong visceral reaction to a video was “bad” as well, Gaga’s “Bad Romance” had me similarly breathless watching in “WTF” amazement. And kudos to M.I.A for brilliantly riding that mainstream exposure wave from her involvement with Madge’s project before dropping her own far superior video on the very same day!
There isn’t much else to say about this video—- “Bad Girls” is the perfect marriage of song, visual and artist and it sends a strong message to other “girls” that you can be “bad”... and keep your clothes on too! Grade: A+
