So despite functioning on only two hours of sleep yesterday, I made the genius decision to plop my tired a$$ in a comfortable chair in a dark theater in an attempt to watch a musical for an hour and a half… bad move.
I saw the trailer for Nine a while ago and got all amped from it cuz it looked like it was gonna be the second coming of Chicago, which I loved. I’m not really big on the whole show tunes scene, but as a choreographer I have always loved big budget production numbers with precise choreography whether it is MJ in “Smooth Criminal”, Bollywood movies, or “Good And Bad Hair” from School Daze. So with such high expectations for this flick, I gotta say that I came away from Nine feeling like it was more of a “Seven”. Although beautifully shot, lit, costumed, and choreographed, I spent the first half of the movie thinking that I was watching scrapped performances from Chicago. In fact, the only numbers that really resonated with me were Fergie’s “Be Italian” and the film’s highlight (at least for me), Kate Hudson doing “Cinema Italiano”.
Kate channels her inner Goldie and does her mom proud in this flashy ode to everything that was cool and fly about that whole 60s mod scene. Despite extreme fatigue, I knew I had to be awake for this scene, and I was not disappointed. And true to form, I’m now obsessed with the song. I’ve read that they are gonna aggressively push this as a single, complete with remixes, so its only a matter time before I totally embrace my inner martini-sipping, pointy leather shoe and skinny tie wearing cool cat daddy.
Check out one of the trailers below which doubles as an unofficial video for the song and if you’re feeling all “groovy, baby!” by the end, then do yourself a favor a download the track here. Oh, and you really gotta like musicals in order to make it through this one otherwise, ya might wanna give Avatar a second viewing.
NOTE: With the pop culture radar aimed squarely at MTV’s Jersey Shore right now, I couldn’t help but laugh at the numerous “guido” references in the song cuz all I could think of was Snooki ‘n’ dem.
