Its “Single Ladies” meets Motown with a sprinking of Esther Williams’ old school aqua musicals! I’m not a huge fan of Raphael’s retro schtik, but I do love this video. It is so expertly executed and well done that I have no problem suspending my “not diggin’ his music” stance long enough to appreciate this clip. So no, I doubt the YouTube queens will be rushing for their camcorders to pay homage to “Let’s Take A Walk”, but it is still worthy of some kind of mainstream attention.
While Saaidiq is busy channeling Marvin Gaye, the ladies do the damn thing in all-white ensembles freaking 60s-inspired ‘ography while showing you what the Rockettes would look like if they had a little mo’ flava…. and color. All in all, “Let’s Take A Walk” is one of the best dance videos of the year (so far) that will sadly get overlooked because its not the work of some light skinned, 90 pound, radio-friendly teenager. Grade: A
Oh, and for those who don’t get the Esther Williams reference, I’ve included a scene from one her films below.
