Bachata superstar Romeo Santos just dropped his sophomore release Formula Vol. 2 and while the album doesn’t stray too far from his well… formula, the inclusion of songs featuring the likes of Drake and Nicki Minaj suggests that despite an already huge fanbase, Ro wouldn’t mind grabbing the attention of audiences who didn’t pay attention to his previous crossover collabs with Usher and Lil Wayne.
One track that immediately caught my attention was “Yo También”, his duet with Marc Anthony. The new jack bachata prince Santos pairing up with celebrated salsa king Anthony—- two titans on one track? I couldn’t hit the play button quickly enough! The first few moments had me thinking that the song was gonna be an update of “Hasta Ayer”, one of my all-time favorite Marc Anthony jams. The track, however, quickly ventures into salsa territory reminiscent of what producer Sergio George was crafting for artists like Marc in the 90s as “Yo También” sounds like something straight outta the Todo A Su Tiempo recording sessions.
While Santos does a respectable job holding his own vocally, it’s a “game over” situation the minute Marc opens his mouth and reduces poor RoRo to a lil’ kid at a grown man’s party. The imbalance of lung power isn’t a deal-breaker, though, as “Yo También” is a solid track and an instant fave on an album that I haven’t yet fully digested. Spanish radio will be playing this every five minutes for the remainder of the year in about… oh, they’ve already started. Sample the latest from Romeo below before we’re all completely tired of hearing it.
