I got put on to Sampa The Great only a few months ago but was so hyped off of the “Final Form” video that I was lowkey geeked about the news that a full-length album (The Return) set to drop in the fall. Here we are a few month later and—- Album dropped, ears blessed… and I am officially on Team Sampa!
While I enjoy “coochie rap” as much as anyone else, I definitely feel we need to bless a female MC—- not rapper—- with mainstream approval cuz they have more to offer than raunchy couplets about their vaginas. Enter Sampa The Great, a Zambia-born, Australia-based artist who redefined this year’s Hot Girl Summer with certifiable bars and a style that was definitely her own.
Pro-black, pro-woman and densely packed with cultural references, Sampa’s rhymes are a needed break from the stripper anthems and trap rap that seems to get more attention from the masses. The videos for “Final Form” and “OMG”, both featured tracks on the new album, transport us to a world of African-blessed fashion flyness where #blackpeoplemagic is effortless and in abundance.
Check ‘em both out below and give The Return a listen when you’re in the mood for what older heads like to call “real hip hop”.
