The Tops In Pop - 2009

Now that we’ve officially bid adieu to 2009, I suppose the time has come to look forward instead of back… well, gimme a minute to look back one mo’ time.

Besides spiked egg nog, scandalous holiday parties, and “All I Want For Christmas Is You” on the radio every five minutes, December has also traditionally been “Best Of… Lists” season.  Sure, I could climb aboard the “What I Like” Express and rattle off my faves of ‘09 (The Fame Monster, “Empire State Of Mind”, The September Issue, Chew Fu remixes) but I will instead turn a spotlight on someone else’s top picks, namely Billboard Magazine, and perhaps then I won’t seem so self-indulgent.

OK, well this part is a little self-indulgent: I was a total Billboard geek as a kid and thought nothing of spending hours after school at the library catching up on old issues—- hey don’t judge, it was either obsess over the top ten records of the week or steal cars and sling dope on the corner.  Nowadays, I still pay attention to the charts, but I’m not as vigilant about keeping up on every song on the radio.  So there I was minding my own business surfing the net when this guy DJ Earworm comes outta nowhere and awakens the chart nerd in me that I assumed was taking an extended nap.

For the last few years, mash-up maestro DJ Earworm has taken Billboard‘s Top 25 (pop) hits of the year and blended them into a brilliant and seamless medley for your listening and viewing pleasure.  The irony is that some of these artists got the big “no, thank you” from me (Flo Rida, Miley Cyrus, Soulja Boy) this year, but hearing their singles in this context makes me not hate them quite as much.  Check out E’s video montage below and then be sure to take advantage of his generosity by downloading the mp3 here.
